Somehow, I’m already on my third. There’s a lot going on here, and I’m grateful for the steady supply of distractions. This time, I’ve been thinking about how to write romance characters, because the genre runs on one particularly entertaining fuel: contradiction.

In my previous article on character building, we looked at the broader process of creating believable, memorable characters, including the contradictions that make them interesting. Romance deserves its own look. After all, few genres ask two people to be so thoroughly at odds with themselves. They want intimacy, fear it, then insist they’re happy alone while composing a wedding playlist. Fun!

Want to write too? What are they wrong about? What do they misread? What do they want that conflicts with something else?

Give each character a belief about love, an assumption that shapes their behaviour. One believes love means being needed. Another thinks needing someone is a humiliating admission of weakness. A third believes that if a relationship requires effort, it must be the wrong relationship. I could go on and on. (Yes, I love romance.)

Then put those beliefs under serious pressure. Someone expecting abandonment might leave first, then treat the resulting loneliness as proof. Oof. That’s a messy one. The gap between what they claim to want and what they do is a narrative disjunction the story can gradually close.

Interiority matters, too. Show the gap between outward response and private reaction. For example, a character delivers a cool comeback, then spends twenty minutes wondering whether they sounded ridiculous. (They did.) We get to know the person behind the pose.

While drafting, I would ask:

- What do they want the other person to believe?
- Which truths are they reluctant to admit?
- What would make their love interest lose patience?
- What might the other person notice?

A character might be intransigent about asking for help, magnanimous when a rival succeeds, fastidious at work and slapdash elsewhere. They’re still the same humans who brought their baggage to chapter one. There will be laundry and disputes over whose turn it is to choose the film.

The relationship should change how characters understand themselves, but not necessarily replace their personalities. Think about it: would you expect someone to become an entirely different person just because they fell in love? A perspicacious love interest can spot a pattern, but can’t do the work for someone else.

I’m fond of endings where characters make a choice that would have been impossible at the beginning.
