You have characters to introduce, a (small) world to establish, a conflict to develop, and an ending to make worthwhile. All in a few thousand words. No leisurely detours through the protagonist’s childhood.

Think about a locksmith who spends years opening other people’s doors. One evening, he comes home to find his own front door unlocked. Nothing is missing, and there’s no sign of a break-in. But someone has left a key on the kitchen table.

That’s a premise. An intriguing one (to me). But it isn’t yet a story. At this stage, the idea might still be inchoate: full of possibilities, but without a clear direction.

The story begins when something happens that forces the locksmith to act. Maybe the key belongs to a house he swears he has never visited, despite finding a photograph of himself standing inside it. Suddenly, we have questions, possibilities, and a reason to keep reading.

The structure determines how those possibilities unfold. Reveal the photograph too early, and you lose a potentially compelling discovery. End with the locksmith simply putting the key in a drawer, and you will leave the reader wondering why they bothered following him in the first place. Eventually, something happens that explains everything. That might work, but there’s a risk that the story becomes a sequence of atmospheric incidents rather than a developing narrative.

A stronger middle changes the situation. Perhaps Elena learns that someone has been leaving fresh footprints outside the cellar door. Each development could alter our understanding of what’s happening or force Elena to make a decision she could previously avoid.

I also wouldn’t interpret escalation as a requirement to make everything bigger.
